dc.description.abstract The purpose of the study was to determine the nature of listening as a communication skill, to assess the importance of listening as a communication and managerial skill for the headmaster, and to suggest ways of improving listening ability. The research included sending questionnaires to 20 headmasters and their members of staff. It was found that listening is a complex process requiring intense concentration and physical and mental energy. There are many barriers that prevent the headmaster from listening effectively. By following guidelines and participating in a listening programme his listening proficiency can, however, be improved. Until now hardly any headmaster has ever received listening training in his professional career. en
