dc.description.abstract This dissertation proves that Nobonidus was the subject of a very negative portrayal by modern historiographers in the early part of this century. The reasons for this portrayal was mainly due to a misevaluation of the works of the Marduk-priests written after the defeat of Nabonidus. An evaluation of the reign of Nabonidus was conducted on three facets of the history concerning Nabonidus, the statesmanship of Nabonidus, the religious views of Nabonidus, and the distinguished name of Nabonidus at the fall of Babylon. The following results were proved by this evaluation: Nabonidus disposed of a proved military expertise; Nabonidus practised good management amidst opposition from religious leaders; Nabonidus had to cope with severe problems resulting from the bad administration which he inherited; Nabonidus actually addressed the religious and economical problems of his empire to the best of his ability. The dissertation endeavours to prove that a paradigm shift in the historiography concerning Nabonidus has indeed occurred and that a new paradigm is already starting to develop amongst scholars. en
