dc.description.abstract According to statistics divorce is on the increase in South Africa. The natural consequences of a divorce are, amongst others, stress on interpersonal, relationships and social decay. In order to prevent the occurrence of these consequences, it is advisable to teach married couples .knowledge and skills pertaining to marriage enrichment.

Teaching married couples marriage enrichment skills,; will enable; them to identify issues and potential problem areas, help family members to generate alternative solutions, and offer opportunities for experimenting with new behaviour patterns. Couples with no major problems may talk to each other as well as the group leader and gain increased knowledge and improved abilities to benefit from marital relationships on an improved level of satisfaction.

.This research was undertaken to examine the effect of the use of social, groupwork in marital enrichment programmes. The aim was to improve knowledge of people and human relationships, and enhance their social abilities, bringing deeper, positive satisfaction in a marital relationship.

In order to achieve this, an extensive; review of the existing literature was made with the aim of identifying the different phases of a marriage, insights about self-esteem, communication, decision making, conflict-solving; sexual behaviour, intimacy and the loving process that can deepen marital life in many ways. Social groupwork as a method in marriage enrichment and the different marriage enrichment programmes were also included in the study. This was combined with an empirical investigation into married couples' self-esteem, marriage satisfaction, sexual satisfaction and their family relationship. The above-mentioned principles were put to practice during a marriage enrichment weekend. In addition, questionnaires were administered to married couples who had attended marriage enrichment programmes conducted by social workers.

The findings of the empirical investigation indicated that there was remarkable growth by married couples, especially in their marriage satisfaction. The research proved that social groupwork was the best method for marriage enrichment programmes, the reason being that group interaction positively influenced growth of an interpersonal relationship within marriage context, as well as growth in group context.

In conclusion, it must be stated that social workers should spend more time on preventional services pertaining to marriage enrichment. Prevention is, after all, better than cure. en
