dc.description.abstract H.J. Joel Gold Mining Company Limited is a member of the Johannesburg Consolidated Investment Company Limited (JCI) group of companies. The following computerized information technology is used at the Joel Mine: a Centum Yokogawa process control computer; a wide area network for the processing or reprocessing of data, and personal computers for the manipulation of data and the compilation of ad hoc reports. The main purpose of the study was to determine the effectiveness of the current computerized management information systems at the Joel Mine by conducting an investigation to determine the degree of user satisfaction. Deficiencies were identified. A secondary purpose was to determine whether the conclusions and recommendations were applicable to the other gold mines in the JCI group. Recommendations were made to correct the deficiencies and to establish the ideal management information system for H J. Joel. The main objective of the study was thus achieved. The conclusion was reached that the recommendations for the Joel Mine are applicable to the other gold mines in the group. The secondary objective of the study was also achieved. en
