dc.description.abstract This study aims to: determine the different types of goal orientation, and the interactive relationships between goal orientation, subject choice and academic achievement; empirically determine the relationship between the goal orientation of Standard 7 learners and the school variables; and empirically determine the relationship between goal orientation and the age of the Std. 7 learners. From the literature review, it is evident that there are different orientations which influence subject choice and academic achievement. There are students who are mastery/learning orientated and there are those who are ego/performance orientated. A string relationship is also evident between goal orientation and the attributional style of students. A relationship is also evident between goal orientation and the school variables. The empirical study leads to the following conclusions: there is no relationship between the goal orientation and the subject choice of the learners in this study, in both mathematics and history; there is a relationship between the goal orientation and academic achievement of the learners in this study, in mathematics, but not in history; there is also a relationship between the goal orientation of the learners and the school variables; but there is no relationship between goal orientation and the age of the learners. en
