dc.description.abstract The specific objective of the study was to determine the influence of a cochlear implant on certain aspects (personality and symptomatology, sense of coherence, interpersonal behaviour, family, perceived social support and attitude), of the postlingual deaf adult. The adaptability of an individual is emphasised, as well as the fact that remediation regarding deafness, may have a positive effect on personality functioning and integration... In Chapter 5, the results obtained from the psychometry... are given. The results are compared regarding the focus of the study: whether psychological functioning will differ after a cochlear implant. From the graphic presentation, the following is evident: * There is an increase in openness, agreeableness and dutifulness. * There is a decrease in neurotisism * There is an unpredicted decline in extraversion. * Postoperative there is an improvement towards a more practical, less conventional attitude, with a slight decline in relationships. * There is less social responsibility, less co-operation and less tact. * Individualism increased. * There is a positive decline in aggression and negative affect. * An overall increase in life satisfaction is evident. * Postoperative there is also a significant increase in assertiveness, confidence, as well as adaptation. en
