dc.description.abstract The historic missionary stations Elim, Genadendal and Wupperthal were systematically underdeveloped through the operation of prevailing political-economic processes and structures. Currently these areas are characterised by wide-spread poverty, poor infrastructure and lack of a clearly defined community development programme. Social and economic conditions are further complicated by the fact that the economically active sector of the population is employed elsewhere, leaving behind elderly parents, pensioners and young children who cannot satisfactorily tackle or implement development strategies. With this in mind, the three historic missionary communities paid considerable attention to tourism as part of a broader development strategy. In this study, a materialist perspective is used to explain the patterns of spatial inequalities and also the specific role tourism plays in reproducing and perpetuating these inequalities in the three rural areas. A holistic impact assessment framework was developed in order to systematically assess the impact of this foreign industry on all levels of the community under study. The methodological approach combines an empirical research strategy where questionnaires were distributed amongst residents and tourists, with phenomenological methods (using participant observation as well as structured and non-structured interviewing). Thus the objectives, strategies, decisions and perceptions of the local inhabitants could be captured in a meaningful way. en
