dc.description.abstract COB 101 is a new fossil hominin from Coopers Cave. This specimen is comprised of the supraorbital, zygomatic, infraorbital and nasoalveolar region along with a right upper third premolar.

The aim of this study is to assess the nonmetrical and metrical characters found in COB 101 are consistent with P. robustus. Nonmetrical and metrical characters are used to evaluate morphology and potential interspecific and intraspecific variation (including sexual dimorphism) in extant and extinct taxa. These taxa are then used as a reference to assess the morphology, and to determine the taxonomic attribution and sex of COB 101.

COB 101 resembles P. robustus with particular similarity to SK 48 and SK 79, in several diagnostic characters, such as, the high temporal line, the rounding infefolateral orbital angle, the presence of anterior pillars, presence of the maxillary sulcus, the round lateral nasal margin and the smooth inferior nasal margin. In this study, there are no nonmetrical or metrical characters for P. robustus that is able to determine the sex of COB 101.

The taxonomic attribution of COB 101 to P. robustus along with the upper third molar belonging to A. africanus and an upper central incisor allocated to Homo sp. indet. may suggest that Coopers is the second site after Sterkfontein to have three fossil hominin taxa. en
