dc.description.abstract Eleven field trials of insecticide-impregnated bed nets (ITNs) in the control of P. falciparum malaria are reviewed. Some of these trials were carried out in different regions of the world and reflect wide geographical and epidemiological variation of the disease. The method of recruitment, outcomes of interest, methods of measuring these outcomes and the length of follow-up were also different. Data from these studies suggest that insecticide-impregnated bed nets, when used properly, are effective in preventing malaria-related mortality and morbidity in all age groups. The summary incidence ratio measuring death as the outcome measure gave a relative risk ratio of 0.59 (95% confidence interval 0.51-0.69; P < 0.001) and the subset measuring all other outcome measures combined gave a relative risk ratio of 0.62 (95% confidence interval of 0.58-0.67; P O.001) respectively. The overall risk ratio combining all the outcomes for those using ITNs and those not using ITNs was 0.65 (95% confidence interval 0.61-0.70: P< 0.001). This analysis suggests that ITNs are effective in protecting users from malaria, decreasing the incidence rate ratio by 35%) in the trials included in this meta-analysis. en
