dc.description.abstract This research concentrates on some of the symptoms of the software crisis' - the difficulties of planning, controlling and evaluating the application development processes. It is an empirical study of some of the known methods of measuring programmer performance. Identified approaches are analysed critically and categorized. A hypothesis that programmer productivity can be measured in terms of the number of program functions implemented is tested and evaluated. Specific areas for further research are identified. en
