dc.description.abstract This research report is a general investigation into the status of waste elimination, referred to as productivity, of small mechanical component manufacturing in South Africa.

The research was undertaken by interviews with persons responsible for production in the firms concerned. Twenty four firms were used as a sample. This sample is limited, but could not be improved as many firms were not available to be involved in this research. The main reason given was that they were too busy to grant interviews.

Several conclusions were reached. Quantitative methods are not used in small manufacturers. Inventories are relatively high although the firms felt they needed the inventories to be able to respond to their customers orders. Raw materials suppliers were blamed for high raw material stocks. Work in process is low in most firms.

The firms perceived their manufacturing and production planning methods to be adequate except for one which was in the process of investigating new methods in planning its production. The research indicates that the is no production planning done and therefore no production control is possible. A lot can be done to improve the production process. Preventative maintenance on production machines is not done at all.

Quality control is generally adequate as can be indicated by the confidence of the firms on their products. In general, much more could be done to improve the production area of small manufacturers so that they can face up to foreign competition. en
