dc.description.abstract The continuously growing poultry industry has to combat the problem of waste in the form of dead and rejected animals and consequently the large amount of feathers. Feathers and feathermeal can be utilised as a protein food supplement however, the digestibility of feathermeal is poor, but can be improved by digestion with bacterial keratinases. Eight keratinolytic bacteria were isolated from different keratincontaining sources such as chickenfeathers, sheepwool and a leather factory. Three species were identified: "Bacillus anthracis, B. cereus" and "Alcailgenes faecalls". Optimal growth conditions for enzyme production were established and varied from 28 Celsius - 37 Celsius and the pH from 6 - 8. The keratinase enzymes of three of the isolates were partially purified. The optimum activity of these partially purifies enzymes was at a pH of 8 and a temperature range of 28 Celsius - 37 Celsius. The respective molecular weights of the enzymes obtained from "B. cereus" J and "A. faecalis" is about 45 kDa and that of "B. cereus" O about of 68kDa.
