dc.description.abstract This research report is an exploratory study which attempts to investigate the experiences of student mentors and protégés within a university mentoring program in terms of psychosocial and academic guidance.

South African universities are being transformed in parallel with national events and student mentoring might be considered worthwhile in that it is primarily about the transition of individual students into the university.

Qualitative research was conducted to ascertain the perceptions of mentors and protégés in terms of the program's goals; their expectations of the program and, parts of the program which they considered to either hinder or contribute towards the achievement of these goals. An attempt was made to understand the mentoring relationship (nature of relationship; satisfying and frustrating aspects of the relationship; benefits and downfalls of the relationship) from the perspective of both mentor and protégés. Various psychosocial functions were identified and explored along with the type and effectiveness of the academic guidance given and received. Finally, issues pertaining to race and gender were probed.

Although this research report should not be viewed as an extensive evaluation of the MESAB mentoring program currently being run at the University of the Witwatersrand, it does provide some insight into the experiences of the mentors and protégés and in so doing, clarifies the attainment of the goals of the program. Areas of the program which need to be reviewed are also highlighted. en
