dc.description.abstract Switching techniques and snubber circuits were investigated. A new switching technique was developed and evaluated for application in inverters. The new technique solves some of the problems traditionally experienced with the switching of high power NPN transistors when driving inductive loads. <br><br> The technique uses the NPN and MOSFET transistors in a cascode configuration. These transistors are analysed with mathematical models. It can be used for simulation, because effects like the influence of the reverse recovery of the freewheeling diode on the model of the NPN power transistor is considered. PWM control was used and the influence on the performance of the system investigated. <br><br> The importance of snubber circuits in the reliability of the system was investigated. A passive dissipative snubber circuit was analysed mathematically. The different possibilities for power switches were investigated to determine their relative performance in an inverter environment. en
