dc.description.abstract The conditions under which an exclusive right-turn phase is warranted at a signalized intersection has been the subject of many investigations in the past. This past research has, however, always suffered the major disadvan- tage that it has never taken into consideration the impacts on all traffic at an intersection of installing exclusive right-turn protection. Basically it has assumed that a right-turn phase is warranted if demand exceeds capacity for the movement, regardless of the consequences on all other traffic at the intersection.<br><br> The approach adopted in this research project accounts for the impact on all critical movements of providing exclusive right-turn protection. Where nec- essary, South African road conditions have been employed together with proven international methods of intersection analysis. The end product is an equation incorporating all critical movements, which may be used to determine levels at which protected right-turn phasing is warranted for a particular intersection geometry. It is recommended that the method be tested and if proven satisfactory further work be done on producing warrants for further geometric configurations. en
