dc.description.abstract The overall goal of the study is to create a text which has as target group the adolescents of the upcoming Afrikaans community of Promosa, Potchefstroom. A further goal of the study is to promote the creation of texts by the community itself, so that community based texts would come into being. Except for writing, it is the aim of the study to promote reading with the adolescents Promosa, by creating texts with which they will identify and which they will read.

With the creation of a text for the target group in mind, specific methods are followed. The adolescent as target group is defined in Chapter 2. This includes the cultural and social environment of the adolescent in Promosa. The forming of identity is discussed, and the physical, cognitive, moral, social, emotional, and personality development of the individual during this phase receive particular attention.

The heuristic framework for the study is formulated in Chapter 3. Concepts which are important for the rest of the study are explained. These include identity, space, hybridity, liminality and boundaries. Markers of identity and space are formulated. Narrative identity is touched on briefly. A survey of publications by brown writers in South Africa, specifically youth publications, is given.

The narrative and its influence on the identity formation of the adolescent in Promosa are the core of the study. The narrative is discussed and defined in Chapter 4. This includes a broad background on the development of the narrative in different fields of study, the factors which influence the creation and transferral of the narrative, as well as the functions of the narrative.

The texts created by high school learners of Promosa, are analised in Chapter 5. The aim of the analysis is to gain knowledge on the adolescent in Promosa's own view of his/her identity and space. The analysis is made by means of the markers set out in Chapter 3. From the texts information can also be gained about the adolescent's experience of hybridity, liminality and boundaries. This information is used in the writing of a youth novel for the target group.

In order to create a text for the target group successfully, their reading habits, interests and needs are examined in Chapter 6. These are then compared to findings of similar investigations on national and international level, at different times and places.

The youth novel, "Tussen Kynoch en die maan" ["Between Kynoch and the moon"], is given in Chapter 7. A reception study with adolescents in Promosa shows that the text is received well by the target group.

After completion of the study, the conclusion is reached that it is indeed possible for an outsider to create a text for adolescents in Promosa, and also to promote the creation of texts by them, so that community based texts would come into being with which these adolescents will identify and which they will read. en
