dc.description.abstract Investment decisions are particularly important for a capital-intensive industry and are becoming increasingly difficult because of their growing uncertainty and complexity. The purpose of this thesis is to explore the broad field of investment decisions. Investment decisions are classified to distinguish between investments aimed at increasing or maintaining profits or not yielding a profit, since each of these categories has different criteria, assessment methods and inherent risks. Investments are investigated briefly with specific reference to the firm's goals, criteria and cost of capital. Various criteria applicable to capital-intensive investments are investigated and compared. The use of the Internal Rentability Method and the Current Value Method as well as variations of both, is recommended. The accounting earnings and their variability are important. The origin of risk and uncertainty and ways of dealing with them are studied. The techniques of risk preference are studied but not recommended. Inflation is briefly discussed and ways of dealing with it are proposed. The post-audit is important and should be introduced without delay. en
