dc.description.abstract This dissertation studies the relationship between strategy and structure in the Exploration Division of a major South African Mining finance house. It shows how technological innovations moved the mining finance house to reformulate its corporate exploration strategy, and to expand the Exploration Division via the establishment of Technology Units and Regional Exploration Offices. However, the structure of the Division was not modified to accomodate the growth, and this led inevitably to organisational inefficiency. An improved organisational structure of the Division was not modified to accomodate the growth, and this led inevitably to organisational inefficiency. An improved organisational structure was therefore derived from generally accepted principles of organisational design, and a similar structure was eventually introduced into the Division. In this analysis the dissertation provides a fascinating confirmation of Alfred D. Chandler's classic work on the relationship between strategy and structure in large organisations, and specifically of his so-called "structure follows strategy" theory. A subsidiary theme investigates the optimum approach to mineral exploration in Southern Africa. A framework is established for conceptualising the exploration alternatives, and the mineral inventory survey strategy is discussed in detail. It is shown that future mineral exploration strategies could be significantly influenced by the availability of earth imagery acquired from space. en
