dc.description.abstract The syntheses of aromatic carboxyl functionalized polymers by Atom Transfer Radical Polymerization were effected by the following two methods:<br><br> (a) The initiation of styrene and methyl methacrylate polymerization with &alpha;-bromo-p-toluic acid as functionalized initiator in the presence of copper (1) bromide and 2,2<sup>'</sup>-dipyridyl as catalyst system proceeded via a living fashion to afford quantitative yields of the corresponding aromatic carboxyl functionalized polymers with predictable molecular weights (M<sub>n</sub>=2 000-30 000) and narrow molecular weight distribution (M<sub>w</sub>/M<sub>n</sub>l. 1-1.5).<br><br> (b) The initiation of styrene and methyl methacrylate polymerization with a new compound, 2-[4-(bromomethyl)phenyl]4,5-dihydro- 4,4-dimethyloxazole, as functionalized initiator in the presence of copper (1) bromide and 2,2<sup>'</sup>-dipyridyl as catalytic system proceeded via a living fashion to afford quantitative yields of the corresponding oxazoline functionalized polymers with predictable molecular weights (M<sub>n</sub>=2000-40000) and narrow molecular weight distribution (M<sub>w</sub>/M<sub>n</sub>=l.l-1.6). Successive acid and base catalyzed hydrolysis of the oxazoline group of the oxazoline-functionalized polymers leads to the formation of the aromatic carboxylic acid functionalized polymer.<br><br> The functionalized initiators and the functionalized polymers were purified and characterized by <sup>1</sup>H NMR and <sup>13</sup>C NMR spectroscopy, IR spectroscopy, size exclusion chromatography, thin layer chromatography, adsorption column chromatography, gas chromatography, potentiometry and elemental analysis. en
