dc.description.abstract This study emphasises the importance of formulating industrial relations strategy within company context. The literature survey indicates that industrial relations is a critical aspect in South African companies. Various environmental variables influence the quality of industrial relations within these companies. This necessitates that strategic industrial relations planning (internal and external environmental scanning and formulating a mission, strategy and goals) undelies a conceptual-holistic approach to industrial relations management. The empirical investigation, involving the "top 100" listed industrial companies in South Africa, supported the findings of the literature study. The conclusions and recommendations emphasise a strategic approach to the management of industrial relations. The indus- trial relations function should actively contribute towards the success of companies. Further, as part of overall company strategy, it is recommended that industrial relations objectives, substrategies and policy should be innovated within a plurastically-based corporate industrial relations strategy. en
