dc.description.abstract In this study of Scarlatti's sonata movements 1 381 points of division have been identified. Of these, 547 (40 per cent) are preceded by preparatory material. Preparatory material is not distributed evenly among the movements. The use of preparatory material before the main formal divisions is concentrated in 305 movements out of a total of 575. These 305 movements contain 785 points of formal division. 547 of these (70 per sent) are preceded by preparatory material. en
