dc.description.abstract Aims to provide a historical view of W.H. Bell's career and influence by means of a reliable literature study. The criterion for the choice of aspects studied was their importance for future research. As background, an extrapolation is made of a handwritten document concerning Bell's childhood and student years in England. A detailled chronology of the South African College for Music's development from 1912 to 1935, when Bell was the first principle, is given. This is the core of the study in that it represents the fusion of W.H. Bell's career and influence in this office. In addition, it is attempted to demonstrate the influence Bell had outside his immediate working sphere at the college, namely his influence on the ordinary music lover, on the general public and on his small group of private students. A list of Bell's compositions is included, which is chronologically ordered. en
