dc.description.abstract The need for an understanding of childhood personality as an aspect which is unique to this life period and different from that of adulthood, has increasingly been recognised. Along with this, the need for its accurate assessment has been recognised. The superiority of objective assessment measures over others as far as reliability and validity is concerned has been widely documented. The use of objective measures has facilitated the development of empirically-based typologies for the diagnosis and classification of childhood personality and psychopathology. This is seen to be a more relevant approach in this field. A well-known objective measure especially developed for use with children, namely, the Personality Inventory for Children (PIC) (Wirt, Lachar, Klinedinst, & Seat, 1977), was used in this study. The PIC is generally accepted as being a multidimensional measure with proven validity and reliability. The aim of the study was to further examine the usefulness of the PIC in the South African context by establishing whether the PIC profiles obtained by the children in the sample could be sorted into distinct cluster groups. A sample of 49 5-and 6-year-old coloured pre-school children was drawn from a database at the University of Port Elizabeth. Equal proportions of males and females, representative of the three socioeconomic groups (upper, middle, and lower), were used in this study. A cluster analytic technique was applied to the T-scores of the 12 full-length profile scales of the PIC. Three clusters were derived which accounted for 65.63% of the variance within the data. Further analysis supported the internal validity of the three clusters. Significant differences between the three clusters on 11 of the 12 clinical scales were found. The three clusters found were described as a normal cluster, a cluster with cognitive and externalising problems and with an apparent tendency to internalising problems, and a distinctly abnormal cluster with cognitive, internalising, and externalising problems. The results of this study underline the potential usefulness of the PIC in the diagnosis of personality dimensions in coloured South African pre-school children. en
