dc.description.abstract An integrated review is presented of traditional as well as contemporary theories regarding the criminality of the female. An assessment of the role of the South African female criminal is based on statistical analysis. The finding is that the number of female convictions doubled during the period 1949-1978. In contrast to trends among her European and American counterparts, the South African female is still committing sex-related crimes, i.e. offences which can be related to her socially defined female role. No significant increase was noted in convictions for violent crimes, such as murder and assault. On the other hand, a considerable increase in the convictions for crimes against property was apparent. The social, economic and political emancipation of the South African female and the resulting opportunities for criminal behaviour contribute to the increasing number of female offenders in South Africa. en
