dc.description.abstract By means of research of official documents and other relevant literature, as well as an empirical study based on questionnaires, an attempt has been made in this study to conduct an evaluation that is curriculum-orientated rather than pupil-orientated. The most important conclusions which became evident from the results of the empirical study, may be summarised as follows: the pilot programme for Family Guidance has been implemented in the curriculum of two thirds of the schools participating in this research; the content of the programme and the attitude of the teachers and pupils to the content, is such that, in most cases, the teaching of family guidance and sexuality education does not give cause for concern and embarrassment; consideration of adaptations, amendments and additions to the content of the programme is appropriate, and especially that provision should be made for a detailed exposition of information with regards to AIDS; although the majority of schools have adequate supplies of relevant textbooks and reference books, the inadequate supply of video and film material at most schools and a shortage of specified periods for the teaching of family guidance and sexuality education, have caused a number of problems with regard to the implementation and instruction of the programme; primarily as a result of other commitments and large class groups, the two teachers per school who have received in-service training in family guidance, cannot do justice to the effective teaching of the programme; and more effective teaching of the programme is assured if a full set of rules and guidelines with regard to its implementation is made available, and also if the in-service training programme is revised in order to improve the quality of in-service training. In conclusion, in the light of the results of the empirical study, it can be confirmed that the revision of and adaptation to the pilot programme for Family Guidance, as well as the continuous training or intermittent in-service training of teachers, should receive serious consideration. en
