dc.description.abstract Defines risk management very widely, as being involved with the planning, organising and control of activities and resources to minimise the impact of uncertainties. It can also be said that risk management involve all activities to ensure the survival of an organisation. A theoretical background is given to the risk management process. This process consists of three elements: risk analysis, risk control and risk financing. In view of the fact that farm businesses operate in a high risk environment, there exists a need for risk management in agriculture. Sources of risk for agriculture in the Highveld region are investigated and the climate is identified as an important source of risk. Consequently the climate is examined in more detail with the emphasis on the variability of rainfall. The study develops a risk management programme for the Eastern Free State wheat producer. The production, marketing and legal environment in which the wheat farmer operates is analysed. A "Flowchart-checklist", which can be used as a base by producers in developing their own risk management programmes, is developed. The profit margin for farming operations is generally relatively low. The prevention and control of losses caused by risks are therefor of utmost importance. Insurance is not available for all risks and insurance can never fully compensate for the total losses caused by risks. Although the handling of risks has always been a part of the farmer's task, the complexity of the modern environment and the accompanying risks necessitate a professional approach. The proper implementation of risk management principles and techniques can make a meaningful contribution to the profitability of any farming operation. en
