dc.description.abstract The overriding feature of the technological era is one of rapid change in almost every sphere of life. The nature as well as the tempo of these changes influence man's perception of the world, his cultural habits and his judgement of values. Great breakthroughs have been achieved in the areas of especially biological knowledge and scientific technology after the emphasis had shifted from the theory of science to its application in practice. This enabled medical science to influence human history and development in ways which have never before been possible. Sensational breakthroughs are being made and almost overnight certain practices are established without thorough consideration of their practical and ethical implications. This rapid development is taking place against a background of a general lack of consensus on what is valuable in life. The crisis concerning judgement of values leaves an ethical vacuum in which responsible decision-making is seriously affected. A new science, bioethics, has come into being. Its interdisciplinary nature indicates that the practice of science has become a public matter which involves society in its entirety. It is now realised that man's responsibility for that which science has enabled him to achieve, increases in accordance with his technological expertise. Bioethical issues occur over a wide field, only some of which are discussed here. Bioethical issues concern education as well, because of the involvement of society as a whole in some way or another in utilising products of science. A survey amongst a group of practising teachers confirms the hypotheses put forward in this regard. It is clear that the school has a definite responsibility regarding the moral and spiritual preparedness of pupils. The ability to form intelligent judgement and make responsible decisions on matters concerning life-values, can only be achieved if a person has been equipped with a moral-ethical frame of reference. Reflection on "abstract" ethical questions deeply affect the choices people make. Making morally responsible choices in real life situations which require the application of norms, could be an easier task after having thoroughly reflected on the ethical aspects of the matter on hand. Bioethical issues which arise in practice could be useful examples in developing the moral values of high school pupils. In addition to promoting knowledge and insight into the ethical aspects of these vital issues, they also provide an opportunity for acquiring skills in problem-solving and decision-making, which are indispensable in a democratic society. A few recommendations concerning education planners and curriculum developers are made. en
