dc.description.abstract Good training is partly ensured by the use of a scientifically-tested curriculum. The people concerned with the training of Physical Education instructors in the South African Navy realised that the present curriculum was compiled haphazardly, and that certain gaps may occur. That realisation prompted this study. A literature survey was conducted to establish the theoretical base of the research. The conclusion drawn from this survey is that Physical Education has always been a vital component of military training. A further literature survey, focusing on adult education, brought to light that adult learners have certain characteristics which differentiate them from child learners. These differences have important implications for the didactic situation. Adult educators have an important function which requires specific traits and methods if success is to be achieved. Following the theoretical base, an empirical investigation was conducted. A questionnaire was mailed to the designers of the present curriculum. The goal of the questionnaire was to determine the skill and knowledge level of the designers of the training curriculum for Physical Education instructors; to determine whether the curriculum fulfils the general principles and procedures required; and t o establish the approach and level of curriculum development at a micro level. The results indicate a deficiency in skills and knowledge of curriculum developers, and the existence of gaps in the curriculum when measured against general principles and pro-cedures. There are, however, positive results as well, such as a satisfactory knowledge of curriculum development at a micro level. Certain recommendations are made whereby the curriculum designers can prevent the emergence of similar learning gaps in future curriculum development. en
