dc.description.abstract Breyten Breytenbach's book of poetry "Soos die so" is divided into two sections. The first section, entitled "Soos die so", contains poems that were written from January 1974 to September 1974. The second section is called "Papiergelyde" and was written from September 1988 to December 1988. The gap of 14 years between the two sections is not explained in the book, but this gap is not the only stretch of nothingness or emptiness that is found in the book. During this 14-year period, Breytenbach was in prison after being convicted of terrorist activities. The purpose of this study is to provide the reader with some guidelines for the understanding of the book. By linking Breyenbach's book to typical traits of postmodernist art and to the teachings of Zen-Buddhism, a reader can proceed on the journey which Breyenbach envisions in the poem "11 Januarie 1974". This thesis investigates the autobiographical and Zen-Buddhist inscriptions in "Soos die so". Special attention is also paid to the contemporary properties of this collection of poems. en
