dc.description.abstract The demographic changes which can at present be observed throughout South Africa, and specifically in the labour market, make effective career counselling in the high school necessary. In the light of increasing unemployment there is a significant shift in emphasis from job security to employment security. This situation places particular demands on learners with regard to their career development and preparation for eventual career decisions. Although sufficient self-knowledge and relevant career information are important prerequisites for decisions about careers, knowledge regarding personality type preferences also appear to be essential because it can cast light upon the learner's thought and decisionmaking styles. In this research the relationship between personality type preferences (As measured by the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator) and certain dimensions of career development (As measured by the Career Development Questionnaire (CDQ) of a group of Grade 11 boys, was studied. The group for the research consisted of 205 Grade 11 boys in two double medium boys' schools in the Western Cape. The most important finding of the study is that although there are significant relationships between learners' personality type preferences and the dimensions of career development, it must always be interpreted with circumspection and be verified with reference to other relevant information. Specific implications which the abovementioned relationships have for career counselling practice are also discussed. en
