dc.description.abstract The profitability of South African exports to international markets is subject to unforseen additional costs such as transport costs. South African business enterprises can apply various logistical factors to cut or avoid these costs. Such logistical factors are transport modes, collaboration agreements and technological aids. These factors can determine how competitive South African enterprises are in finding new markets, and also how successful they are in extending existing markets. The importance of logistics can never be over-emphasised in the modern fast transport of products to international markets. It is even more so, since participants in the distribution channel all add costs to products. The variety of transport modes available to South African exporters, as well as the reasons for international trade are researched. Phenomena such as international deflationary conditions, for example recessions, are also investigated, as well as the negative effects that they may have on South African exports. Various strategic options are available for South African enterprises. This entails, inter alia, a trade-off to determine whether activities should be handled internally or be contracted out. All these aspects affect the flow of products in the supply chain. The concept of an integrated logistical system is of utmost importance to improve customer service and to increase profitability. South African exporters must see this logistical system as a strategy for growth and prosperity. en
