Abstract:
Investigates urban African housing as a problem caused by the rapidly expanding urban African population and the lack of finances to supply the necessary housing stock. Urban African housing has been made the responsibility of the state by a system of laws which the study describes. Alternative housing projects are postulated as the answer to South African housing shortages. An investigation into the informal urban African building sector reveals that despite the outward squalor of squatter communities, attempts are made by the dwellers to provide comfortable living conditions. The solution to the inadequate provision of housing stock will not however, be solved by alternative housing projects. The solution to the problem will be achieved through the economic development of the African. By changing the present system of laws and educational structure, and allowing Africans to participate freely in South African society, they will be in a position to receive a greater share of the factors of production.
