dc.description.abstract Reviews and evaluates the various location models utilized by planners, with special emphasis upon spatial interaction models for retail location. The methods of the calibration of models are investigated in order that they may be of use under local conditions. The use of a spatial interaction model in forecasting the required retail space for grocery and allied purchases within the Central Business District of the new town of Mitchells Plain is illustrated. The report opens with a description of the uses and requirements of locational models to the planner. This is followed by a description of the four methods of analysing retail location by a modelling process. The problem of the determination of the exponential parameter Lambda (the calibration of the model) is addressed. The selection of Kenilworth Shopping Centre as the site to conduct the calibration exercise is discussed, together with the methods and problems of calibration in general. The resulting Lambda determination of the power of 2, indicates a willingness or necessity to travel fairly long distances by the Coloured population. The final part of the report applies the Huff model and calibration to Mitchells Plain. A forecast of the future retail space for grocery and allied purchases is obtained. The accuracy of the forecast is then discussed and the factors which the model does not take into account considered. In conclusion the relevance of retail location models in this situation is evaluated. en
