Abstract:
Proposes a computer based system for controlling inventories of chemicals and catalysts used in the refining operation of Caltex Oil (SA) (Pty) Limited. The new system is designed to replace a manual system which, although effective, is cumbersome and requires a disproportionate amount of supervisory time. The general approach of the Caltex SA organization to management information systems (MIS) is examined in depth. The objectives and scope of the project are discussed with reference to the specific requirements of the Technical Services Department (TSD) at the Refinery, and the general structure of the corporate information system. A detailed literature survey in the fields of MIS and inventory control is discussed. The MIS survey provides a basis for evaluating the approach adopted by Caltex in developing a corporate information system. The past, present and projected future status of MIS in the Caltex organization is examined. The system is designed to enable TSD to implement it in the short term without recourse to the Computer Services Department. In conclusion, various alternatives to the proposed system are evaluated with reference to the specific requirements of TSD.
