dc.description.abstract This report is an investigation into some of the factors influencing the use of Israel as a springboard for South African exports to the EEC and North America. Before considering these factors, the history of the South African - Israeli economic connection is surveyed in an attempt to determine the extent of co-operation between the two countries. A long history of South African investments and joint ventures in Israel is revealed. The advantages of economic co-operation are further augmented by the two countries political ties. Some concept and determinants in the theory of foreign investment and multinationals are considered in order to establish the crucial and pertinent factors. The determinants of intra-firm export behaviour are analysed. In the South African-Israeli context, advantages are to be found in economies of scale, when producing and marketing to the EEC and North America, and the high probability of backward linkage effects. Israel s trade agreements with the EEC, US and Canada are surveyed in order to determine the advantages it possesses in marketing to these markets over the South African producers. Finally, it is recognised that the possibilities for co-operation to mutual advantage are great, but it is left for operators in private enterprise to evaluate the feasibility and viability of particular projects. en
