Abstract:
This study suggests that the conversion of sea-freight containers as a basis for housing might provide the a viable solution to the alleviation of the housing shortage among low income groups in South Africa. Cost predictions are made on the basis of a pilot project undertaken in mid-1984. Advantages enumerated include their standardization (facilitating conversion into homes), mobility, modularity (facilitating extensions and configurations),, robustness and longevity. and re-saleability. The chief disadvantage identified is the current shortage of these containers.
