dc.description.abstract This dissertation deals with the ethics of the eleventh century philosopher, al-Raghib-al-Isfahani. The research entails a translation of Chapter 1 of Isfahani's Kitab al-Dhari ah ila makarim al-shari ah (The Means to the Noble Qualities of the Law). The dissertation is divided into tow main parts namely the Introduction, and the Translation. The translation of al-Dhari ah is based on the 1987 edition by Ajami. It has seven chapters and Chapter 1 has been translates, entitled On the States of Man, his Faculties, his Virtue and his Character. This is the most important chapter as it contains the philosophical core of Isfahani's ethics. The rest of the book deals mainly with a description of the virtues. Chapter 1 deals with the following topics: the purpose of man, the purification of the soul, the balance of the soul's faculties, the intellect contrasted with desire, man's capacity to improve his character, the virtues of the soul, bodily and external virtues, and obstacles to the attainment of virtues. (these topics are covered extensively in Chapters 5 and 6 of the Introduction, and his views on cosmology, psychology and epistemology (Chapters 1-5). The second part of the Introduction (Chapters 6-10 deals with ethics proper, as it pertains to s description of the virtues. Separated chapters are devoted to Isfahani's virtues of justice (Chapter 7), love and friendship (Chapter 8), economic ethics (Chapter 9) and educational ethics (Chapter 10). In each of these chapters Isfahani is compared with Miskawayh and Ghazzali. It is endeavoured to prove that Miskawayh was an important source for Isfahani, and the latter was an important source for Ghazzali's ethics. en
