dc.description.abstract The purpose of this study was to determine whether supportive nursing group therapy could contribute towards preventing further suicide attempts in individuals who are in crisis situations. The case study method of research was used on four persons who had attempted suicide and were hospitalised for a period of three to six weeks. Over a period of two weeks these four persons received eight sessions of supportive nursing group therapy to assist them to cope with stress in a healthy manner. On the basis of progress reports and telephonic feed-back from the group members it appears that there is positive improvement in the functioning of these persons. All four manage stress more effectively and function better in their work situation. It thus appears that the psychiatric nurse can make an important contribution to the prevention of suicide attempts using supportive nursing group therapy. en
