Abstract:
The author examines the theories of Festinger and Tajfel regarding small groups, and then moves to develop a theoretical model of small group identity. This necessitated a study of the literature regarding the concept of identity, and a reconceptualization of this concept using the systems and differentiation theories as points of departure. The author then proceeds to identify the components of small group identity, discuss the possibility of applying his model within the context of organizations, and comment upon its usefulness as a framework for interpreting the current political situation in South Africa.
