dc.description.abstract The investigation was prompted by the growing concern about the apparently high incidence of different forms of malnutrition and the effect of malnutrition on the health of the aged in Germiston. In an attempt to prevent malnutrition and promote health in the aged, the diet pattern of the aged as well as factors influencing their eating habits were investigated. A non-experimental descriptive method of investigation based on surveys was used. An extensive literature study was conducted to obtain information on "the aged", the influence of nutrition on aging and the factors that influence the eating habits of the aged. The role of the geriatric community health nurse in promoting healthy eating habits and preventing malnutrition in senior citizens was also highlighted. The literature study constitutes the theoretical basis of the investigation. A questionnaire to the aged in Germiston was used to determine eating patterns and the factors that influence these patterns. Interviews were also held in order to obtain information on the availability of geriatric community services, especially food services. It appeared that the eating pattern of the aged was influenced mainly by aging, demographic profiles, finance, illness and ignorance. The following deficiencies were identified: ignorance about the importance of frequent balanced meals and of special diets in the case of certain illnesses; inadequate facilities for senior citizens in certain residential areas, which had a negative influence on their shopping habits; inadequate psychiatric counselling services to cope with the high incidence of depression among the aged, which also influenced their eating patterns. In the light of these shortcomings certain recommendations were made regarding the prevention of malnutrition and the promotion of health among the aged. en
