dc.description.abstract Self-knowledge is a prerequisite for a career choice. Inadequate self-knowledge may lead to a wrong career choice which may in turn lead to work dissatisfaction and a negative attitude. In the process of career guidance, use is principally made of psychometric testing in order to help the youth gain self-knowledge. It is necessary to determine what the youth's intuitive perception of his self-knowledge is, and then to compare this with the test results. The process of career guidance is explored. Four facets of self-knowledge are discussed: interests, aptitudes, personality and intelligence. The research design is discussed. Std 10 pupils' self-knowledge is obtained without the use of tests and these results are compared with the test results. The parents' opinions are also taken into account. According to the results, it appears that the youths have a reasonably good knowledge of themselves concerning their interests, but not their personalities. The parents' estimates range from reasonably realistic to realistic. It would appear that psychometric tests cannot be eliminated from career guidance. It also appears that youths derive more benefit from being guided towards self-knowledge than being merely exposed to a battery of tests. en
