dc.description.abstract Investigates whether there are significant differences in temperament between children who exhibit behavioural problems ane those who do not. The wide range of behavioural problems was narrowed to conduct disorders for the purposes of this study. Conduct disorders were defined according to the DSM-111-R classification and discussed in terms of symptoms, developmental course, epidemiology and etiology. Research studies that highlight the interface between temperament and behavioural disorders were presented. The final sample consisted of 75 children between the ages of 7 and 11 years, whom are resident at the Abraham Kriel Children's Home. The Eyberg Children's Behaviour Inventory (ECBI) was used to assess the children's behaviour in terms of two criteria, namely the intensity of aversive behaviour and the number of problem behaviours that a child enages in. The children were diagnosed as being either conduct disordered or not, depending on their performance in this test. The Dimensions of Temperament Survey-Revised (DOTS-R) was subsequently used to assess all the children in terms of the following dimensions of temperament: general activity, activity (sleep), approach-withdrawal, flexibility-rigidity, quality of mood, rhythmicity of sleeping, rhythmicity of eating, rhythmicity of daily habits and task orientation. An ex post facto research design was employed a statistical analytical techniques, including Hotelling's T-tests, Student's t-test and the F-test, were applied to establish whether the two contrasting groups differed significantly. Findings were listed and recommendations made. en
