dc.description.abstract The object of the study is the treatment of needlework terms in four Afrikaans monolingual dictionaries. The semantic description of needlework terms is discussed. Needlework terms as a semantic field is introduced and a list of terms is given. A distinction is made between terms referring specifically to needlework and more general vocabulary items that are also applicable to needlework. A semantic analysis of definitions is made. The genus-differentia definition is found to be the type that is most commonly employed. A number of microstructural elements, such as morphological and syntactic information, labels, etymological information and illustrative examples, and idioms containing needlework terms are discussed. en
