dc.description.abstract Explores the use of music as an aid in social work. The study has the following objectives: to conduct a literature study, to investigate the nature and extent of training in the use of music therapy, to investigate the extent to which music as a tool is utilised by music therapists, and to suggest ways in which music, as a therapeutic tool, can be utilised in social work. The method of study that is used is exploratory research. The literature study examines the historical development of the use of music as a tool in the social services profession. It has been found that no formal training in music therapy as such exists in South Africa. At three universities, the course for occupational therapists includes training in the use of music therapy. The researcher has compiled ways in which music therapy can be utilised in social work. en
