dc.description.abstract This study argues that supervision as practised in Social Work is a composite of management functions and thus equates to practice management. In the structure of a social work organization, supervision should thus be a middle-management posting, and incumbents appointed accordingly. Primary management functions of the social work supervisor are regarded as being planning, organization, guidance, co-ordination and control; implied management functions as being decision-making, communication and motivation. This investigation comprised a study of the literature with an attempted synthesis of the traditional functions of supervision with the functions of the management sciences, which was then discussed with practising authorities in the field of supervision. en
