dc.description.abstract By listing almost 500 titles previously published on the topic of the early history of Johannesburg as amateurish and unreliable [inter alia because they contain no footnotes (p. ii) !!], this intellectual dtenu laments the dearth of Afrikaans titles, and proceeds to an attempt to defend this prescribed thesis in the face of two previous dissertations and two volumes particularly concerned with the urban government of Johannesburg of the period. His chief argument is based on the fact that he regards them as having neglected contemporary newspaper reports, which he terms "veritably a Hansard" despite having earlier disparaged previous authors for their inaccuracy in uncritically (klakkeloos) recording newspaper accounts. He further claims to have utilised more thoroughly documents preserved in the Transvaal Archives, the Registry of Rand Cities and the Johannesburg Archives. He continues to state: "As A. Nel and J.A. van Zyl have correctly noted, it is not possible to investigate the various facets of a city effectively as one great unit. In order to facilitate a discussion, a city must be regarded in its details and even then it is not possible to describe each facet in detail. The emphasis can only fall on the most important parts so that the complete image can be highlighted thereby. This also goes for the management of a city and therefore this modus operandi had of necessity to be adopted in this thesis so that attention can only be paid to the most important movements (sic!)". en
