dc.description.abstract In order to maintain effective service, libraries are finding it necessary to migrate their computer systems to updated technology. This study examines the migration of the computer system of the library of the University of Natal, Pietermaritzburg from one hardware platform to another. The changeover involves a change of operating system but no change of application software. The study attempts to ascertain whether the changeover is transparent, whether the users are aware of the change, and if not, to find out what the effects of the change on the users are and what the reasons for these effects are. Staff has been chosen as the study population. A questionnaire has been sent to all members of the staff who use the computer system. The results of the survey indicate that the changeover has not been transparent. The changeover has affected most of the study group. A significant number of staff have experienced problems during the changeover. It seems probable that a lack of communication on the process of change and a lack of training in the new system are important contributing factors to these problems. Recommendations are made. en
