dc.description.abstract An exploration of dynamics, methodologies and motivation of cross-cultural communication in mission is an attempt to serge together the best of research in the related fields of communication, culture and missions and to introduce to that theory, a decade and a half of personal experience in cross-cultural missions experience; incorporating recent survey material of the present day attitudes and understandings of ministers and Christian workers of both denominational and non-denominational Churches. The objective is to present a definitive work on cross-cultural communication and to introduce common factors which transcend both communication and culture. The Global context of mission today requires that the local Church be motivated to participate as they have never done so before. This thesis is an attempt to show that the early Eurocentric interpretations of mission dynamics offered a Eurocentric missiology and Gospel. This thesis attempts to merge today's methodologies in research, science, missiometrics, fieldwork and personal experience for the purpose of facilitating people in their understandings of cross-cultural communication in mission. Research indicates that mission in its motivation; interpretation and relevancy to any people group must be dynamic and contextual for the communication of the Gospel message to cross cultural bridges. Culture is part of everyday life. Culture and communication serge as part of one's identity in their society and worldview. Mission, in its attempt to share the Gospel of Jesus Christ has to transcend narrow perspectives of mission, especially those offered by many of our local Churches today. For many, mission is a social Gospel of good works. This paper is an attempt to introduce that mission truly is Missio Dei (Gods Work) and that each Christian has an obligation to participate in that mission going forward into ill the earth. This thesis shows present day dynamics and methodologies and allows the reader to discover where they all fit in as part of God's plan for salvation. Common factors to all people and cultures were explored and this offered to present interconnecting dialogue between culture and communication in the missions' field. This thesis is an investigative work which presents a clearly written framework that will facilitate the lay person, student or profession to discover common denominators in cross-cultural communication and mission. The accumulation of data and research took a period of eighteen months by the author. This thesis was written to present a document that would incorporate cross-cultural communication, mission, research, interview, and personal experience under one title. Many present works present individual aspects of cross-cultural communication or culture or mission or personal experiences. This work, in the author's estimation, was needed to draw the factors together and present a more comprehensive look at cross-cultural communication and mission together. It is apparent that the culture of the aissiologist, the culture of the missionary in the field and the culture of the institutional local Church are far different from each other. They have three different worldviews when it comes to mission. Cross-cultural communication needs to begin amongst these three groups. en
