dc.description.abstract Investigates the relationship between personal and environmental characteristics, occupational factors and psychosocial correlates of sick building syndrome among employees occupying two buildings. The one building has been characterised as sick. Employees working in the sick building consistently perceive prevailing environmental conditions to be more problematic compared to those working in the healthy building. The prevalence of a range of symptoms which characterise sick building syndrome is also consistently higher in the sick building than in the healthy building. Correlational analysis reveals that there is a significant relationship between several personal characteristics, environmental characteristics, occupational factors and psychosocial variables and the total number of symptoms reported by employees in each building. Respondents in the sick building have the propensity to remain absent from work for a significantly greater number of days than those working in the healthy building. Results suggest differences in perceptions and symptomatology and their concomitant impact on employees may exist as a function of personal, environmental, occupational and psychosocial characteristics, which may act independently, synergistically or antagonistically among susceptible individuals. en
