dc.description.abstract The purpose of this study was to identify the perceptions of preceptors of their experiences in distance education Bridging programmes, which are run by the University of Natal, Durban. The reason for choosing these preceptors was that the distance education programmes, in particular for Bridging programmes from enrolled nurses to professional nurses, are facilitated by clinical preceptors. A decentralised approach to these programmes is quite new in this country and the Institute for Nursing is the only one at the University of Natal, which employs part-time preceptors for these Bridging programmes. A sample of 40 preceptors employed by the Institute of Nursing was used and data was collected by means of questionnaires designed by the researcher. It included demographic data, closed ended questions, and open-ended questions addressing the environment, social aspect, job performance and task structure. The response from mailed questionnaires was 75 percent. The social aspect was ranked the highest in the very satisfied category with a mean of 67 percent. When data from preceptors from urban and rural areas were compared there was no marked difference in the perceptions of the preceptors in all the variables used. It is therefore easy to conclude that the needs of preceptors do not depend much on the areas of facilitation but on specific needs like task structure, which had the lowest, mean of 29 percent in the very satisfied category. en
